Tuna Ceviche Tostadas
The beauty of this recipe is how quick, economical, and tasty it is to make. I like to make it on a hot day when I don’t feel like spending time near the stove and instead enjoy valuable moments with my family. Ceviche (also spelled cebiche) is a popular way of combining fresh raw fish or seafood marinade in citrus juices like lime or lemon. The acid in the citrus juices helps to "cook" the fish by denaturing the proteins. However, I am using tuna in a can for this recipe because I know not everybody has a fish market close to where they live.
There are many ceviche recipes that you will find in Mexico, some of which use fish (traditional ceviche and green ceviche ), shrimp, or a combination of seafood (Ceviche Mixto), sometimes fruit, like jicama. So if you like seafood, look no further than these canned tuna ceviche tostadas! Not only are they quick and easy to prepare, but they're also healthy and bursting with flavor. With a zesty combination of fresh tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and avocado mixed with canned tuna and lime juice, these tostadas are sure to satisfy your taste buds. Frequently Asked Questions About Tuna Tostadas
Before I share my recipe, here are a few questions you may have about this recipe.
How do you make Mexican tuna tostadas?
Well, there are many recipes depending on the areas in Mexico and personal preference. This recipe is the one you can make any day of the week in a few minutes, and the one many families in Mexico will prepare at home. You only need a few ingredients, like a can of tuna, tomatoes, peppers, onions, lime juice, avocado, and tostadas.
What is a Tuna Tostada?
A Tuna Tostada is a Mexican dish that typically consists of a crispy tortilla (tostada) topped with tuna and a variety of flavorful and colorful toppings. Nowadays, you can find a variety of recipes and even a fusion of Mexican and Asian flavors, often featuring ingredients like fresh sushi-grade tuna, avocado, lime juice, soy sauce, and various vegetables, like the one you find at the renowned restaurant Contramar in Mexico City.
Can I make my own tostadas?
Yes, here are a few ways that you can make them at home:
- For a healthier alternative, you can bake them in your oven to dry the tortillas, place them on a baking sheet, brush them with vegetable oil or spam spray oil, and cover them with your cooling rack to keep them flat.
- Then, bake at 200 degrees (low temperature) for about 10 minutes.
- Alternatively, you can deep-fry the tortillas in vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until golden, rigid, and crispy.
- Drain on paper towels. (This is the most common method used in Mexico).
How do you store your tuna tostadas?
Tuna tostadas are best enjoyed fresh to maintain their crispiness and vibrant flavors. However, if you have leftovers or need to prepare them in advance, is better to place the tuna mix in an airtight container and in your refrigerator for up to 2 days.
