This recipe is very well known in many Mexican homes and is great for those times when you don’t have a minute to waste. My husband loves this sandwich; it is my go-to meal when we want something quick to eat for dinner. We make this sandwich in a matter of minutes with only a few ingredients. The chipotle peppers in adobo sure add some extra layer of flavor to an otherwise simple dish.
In Mexico, you can find several types of tuna. But the yellowfin tuna is the most common type in Mexican waters (Thunnus albacares). Yellowfin tuna is highly prized for its firm flesh and rich flavor, making it a popular choice for seafood dishes in Mexico and around the world. But feel free to use any other tuna fish to make this sandwich. Ultimately, the best tuna for a sandwich is the one that suits your taste preferences, budget and dietary needs.
Frequently Asked Questions About Chipotle Tuna Salad.
Before I share my recipe, I will answer the questions I usually get about this easy and homemade recipe.
Is Chipotle spicy?
Yes, chipotle chiles do have a level of spiciness, but it's typically considered a medium level of heat. This is because Chipotle peppers are actually smoked and dried jalapeños. Once the Jalapeños mature and turn from green to red, they are smoked and cooked with spices that give them distinct aroma and flavor.
The word “Chipotle” comes from the Nahuatl “Chipoctli”, which means “smoked pepper”. Other Mexican peppers that are smoked and dried, like Chipotles, are Cuaresmeño, Morita, and Mora, to name a few. To moderate the Chipotle pepper's spiciness is to combine it with ingredients such as cream, greek yogurt, or mayonnaise.
Is chipotle sauce good for tuna?
Absolutely, the chipotle sauce is a wonderful addition to tuna. The smoky, spicy flavor of the chipotle sauce complements the rich, hearty taste of tuna very well. It adds a bit of heat that can elevate the tuna from something simple to something more complex and interesting. It's a great way to spice up a traditional tuna sandwich or salad. Just remember, as with any sauce or spice, moderation is key - you want the chipotle to enhance the tuna's flavor, not overpower it.
How to store chipotle tuna mixture (chipotle tuna salad)
Properly keeping your chipotle tuna mixture for your sandwich can ensure that it stays fresh and delicious for as long as possible.
First, store your chipotle tuna salad in an airtight container. Then place it in the refrigerator. Your tuna mixture with mayo and chipotle will remain fresh for 3 to 4 days in your refrigerator. After this point, it might start to lose its flavor and texture, and there could be a risk of foodborne illness.

Hi Mely, I don't like mayo so what is the substitute for the mix ?
Mely Martínez
Hello Tury,
I will skip the mayo if you don't like it.
Diana Mtz
Definitely like Mely said to just not use it because it still tastes delicious without mayo. If you still want to have that creamy texture you can always substitute for vegan mayo it tastes great or you can use plain yogurt I usually use it as well when I want to skip mayo. Hope that helps!!
