Deviled Sausages Appetizer
I love to see how many Latin families are starting to mix the American Culture with our Latin traditions, including food. For that reason, and with the coming American Football Season in full swing, I’m sharing with you a quick appetizer called Deviled Sausages (Salchichas a la Diabla). It is really quick and easy to prepare, and it is commonly cooked in my country for those times when you are watching the game with your friends. I’ll also be showing you a party tutorial to display the Mexican appetizers for your own Game Day party.
You can find the ingredients for this delicious appetizer at your local supermarket, but if you live in Texas like I do, you will find everything at Fiesta Mart, a store that is all about Mexican and Latin groceries.

Let’s start with the appetizer recipe.
Deviled Sausages Appetizer and Game Day Party Food!
- Melt the butter in a frying pan over a medium-high heat, and add the sausages. Turn occasionally, until they are a little golden brown. This will take about 4 minutes. (Please check the ingredients list below)
- While you fry the sausages, mix the ketchup, water, Red Habanero “El Yucateco” sauce, and soy sauce in a small bowl.
- Once the sausages are ready, stir in the sauce mixture and lower heat. Keep stirring it on low heat for 4 minutes. The sauce will reduce and caramelize, adhering to the sausages.
- Serve warm and garnish with the green onion. You can make this appetizer ahead of time and just reheat, adding a little water to the sauce. You can either reheat in a frying pan or in a microwave. They taste
better when warm.
TO GET READY FOR YOUR PARTY:
You can share your love for Mexican food by displaying a table of Mexican appetizers. It might seem like a lot of work, but if you prepare some of the dishes a couple of days in advance, everything will be simple and smooth!
First plan your menu and select items that can be prepared ahead of time or even bought at the store, and just reheated. Some ideas are: Pork Carnitas, Rotisserie Chicken, Quesadillas, several types of salsas, tortilla chips, beans, guacamole, melted cheese topped with crumbled chorizo and roasted poblano peppers strips, an assortment of cheeses, avocado slices, lime wedges and Mexican cream.
Second, buy the food and store it. Third, get some decorations according to the theme, in this case, is Football Season. Two days before the big game day, start preparing your dishes, and one day before, set the table and have all of your plates, napkins, cups, and silverware ready. Keep working on your food preparations.
Sometimes, not all meals can be prepared ahead of time, but you can chop onions, peppers, cilantro, and even make the guacamole the night before. To preserve freshness, cover the chopped vegetables with a wet paper towel and
store in a plastic container in the fridge. To preserve the guacamole, add lime juice and place a plastic over the surface of the guacamole, touching all the guacamole surface.
On Game day, just set the table, get the final preparations for your dishes, and warm those that need to be warmed. Get the ice cubes out, and enjoy the game!

- 1 14oz packaged smoked cocktail sausages*
- 2 tablespoons butter
- ¾ cup ketchup sauce

- If you don’t find the cocktail sausages, use regular size sausages and cut in three.
- You can adjust the spiciness of the mixture by adding first one tablespoon of the sauce, and if you think you can handle the heat, then add the second tablespoon. These are really spicy, hence the name “deviled”.
- There is another version of this appetizer where the ingredients are just mixed without cooking, it still tastes great, but personally, I prefer the cooked sauce.
- Another common recipe makes the sauce a little more water, but since I’m making this dish to be eaten with toothpicks, I prefer the sauce to be thicker, more like a coating than a sauce.
