Mamey | Zapote
The Mamey Sapote fruit has been consumed in Mexico since prehispanic times. This tropical fruit has been around for so long that the Aztects had a name in náhuatl for it "tetzontzapot in " (meaning orange mamey). The Zapote originated in southern Mexico but grows in places like the Caribbean, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Puerto Rico, parts of Central America, and South America. Here in the United States, Florida is the number one producer of mamey.
In This Post
In Mexico, we love mamey for smoothies, popsicles, ice cream, jam, desserts, and just by itself. Around April-May, this sweet and meaty fruit makes its appearance in grocery stores and local markets, where vendors stack them and cut them in zig-zag patterns. Besides desserts, people like to add some fruit to their salads, and muffins, they even add a little pulverized seed to moles.
However, my favorite way to enjoy mamey is in this smoothie, which is so easy to make and has just the right amount of sweetness. So, if you are looking to try a new fruit or you happen to find some, I recommend you to try it; you will love it.
Frequently Asked Questions about Mamey Smoothie.
Before I share my recipe, I will answer the questions I usually get about this homemade recipe.
What is mamey?
Mamey (scientific name Pouteria sapota) It is also known by many names like mamey zapote, mamey colorado, zapote colorado, níspero, red zapote is a fruit that grows in parts of Mexico and areas of Latin America. The fruit is oval in shape with one pointy part, almost like a mango; however, the outer skin is brown and rough, like sandpaper. The interior is orange in color, and the texture is similar to avocado or cooked sweet potato.
What does mamey(zapote) taste like?
The Zapote fruit has a meaty flesh, similar to avocado but in an earthy orange color. When the mamey is ripe, the pulp is creamy and slightly sweet. The fruit was a very unique flavor, and some people think that it tastes like pumpkin pie, while others feel that it tastes like peaches. However, my son insisted that it tasted like a peach with a hint of cherry.
Where to buy Mamey/ Sapote?
Here in the States, you can find mamey at Ethnic markets like Mexican Stores, Latin stores, and sometimes Asian Stores. I have found out that you can find frozen pulp in some of these stores. So if you can't get fresh fruit, check the freezers section, you can probably find the pulp in small bags. If you are visiting Mexico, Mamey is easily found at local farmers' markets (mercados) and your local grocery store, depending on the localities.
How to pick Mamey | zapote?
To pick the perfect ripe Mamaey, first, make sure that the fruit has a uniform color without blemishes. Second, the outer shell needs to be a little soft to the touch, just like a ripe avocado but not mushy or hard. And lastly, the inside has to be creamy with an even terracotta-orange color.
Is Mamey healthy for you?
In addition to being a tasty and creamy fruit, the mamey has many health benefits, like potassium, an excellent source of vitamin C, and a good source of vitamins B6 and E. It is a good source of riboflavin, niacin, vitamin E, manganese, potassium, and dietary fiber.
