Papaya drink

Published: Jun 13, 2015 · Updated: Jul 29, 2019 by Mely Martínez

JUMP TO RECIPE

This drink reminds me of my dad and those hot summer days when he would stand at the kitchen counter, having just come back from work, and would be cutting the papaya and putting all his ingredients in the blender. Agua de Papaya was one of his favorite drinks, just after limeade.

He would even add a little fresh lime juice to the pitcher, as his personal touch to the drink. At that point, he would hear my whining: “Why did you have to do that? I don’t like lime juice on my agua de papaya!” After this he would just smile with his warm eyes looking at me, a memory I will treasure forever.

Papaya Drink | Mexican Drink

Did you know that papayas are indigenous to southern Mexico and Central America? In Mexico, we love to make aguas (flavored waters) out of many different fruits, and their names are simple to figure out. For example: mango water would be agua de mango. In this recipe, obviously, we’re going to learn how to make papaya water or Agua de Papaya.

  • Optional: lime juice of one large lime. My dad loved adding lime juice to this drink.

DIRECTIONS:

  • Place the chopped papaya, sugar, and 2 cups of water in your blender. Process until you have a very smooth drink.
  • Pour this mix into a pitcher. Add ice cubes and the remaining 2 cups of water. Stir and taste for sweetness. Most of the time, papayas tend to be very sweet, so you don’t need to add more sugar to your drink, but that will be a personal taste.
  • Serve and enjoy!

I had a papaya drink with vodka over fifty years ago in Manzanilla and always wanted to know how to make it. It was yummy.
