Strawberry Banana Yogurt Smoothie

JUMP TO RECIPE

When I was growing up, making a trip to the municipal market and buying myself a strawberry smoothie would be the highlight of my day. Watching the owner grab the tall aluminum cup and filling it with fruit, ice, milk, vanilla, and sugar and then placing it under the shiny chrome milkshake machine is quite a scene to watch, and it was the thrill of any kid back in the day.

The "licuados" culture of Mexico.

This is a sponsored post in collaboration with Kroger, recipes, and opinions are 100% mine.

After waiting in a long line, you would start to think to yourself: “that shake that he’s making must be mine!” The cup was full of that delicious pink liquid that was poured into a tall glass and then crowned with a dusting of cinnamon powder and the indispensable straw.

Fruit smoothies and fresh juices have been in our culture for decades. In large and small cities, early morning workers that didn’t have time to prepare breakfast at home usually have a favorite place to go and enjoy a delectable drink that will (for many) be their breakfast or even their main meal of the day. And since these drinks are made with fresh ingredients, they are also a healthy option for athletes after their workout.

When it comes to fruit smoothies and milkshakes, the combinations can include mango, bananas, strawberries, pineapple, apple, alfalfa, spinach, nopales, wheat germ, oatmeal, milk, yogurt, and other fruit juices. They are popular during the morning but are usually available at any time of the day.

One place where you will always find these types of businesses are municipal markets. We call these places “Refresquerias”, and the drinks are called “Jugos” (juices) and “Licuados” (smoothies). These establishments also sell fruit cocktails, which can be topped with granola, wheat bran, wheat germ, shredded coconut, yogurt, raisins, honey, and other ingredients.

We don’t have a municipal market in every city here in the states, but some supermarkets are really good at organizing the products they offer. Have you paid attention to that? I didn’t notice this until last Sunday evening when I went to my local Kroger store.

They have the produce section close to the dairy and cereals sections: everything I needed to make my morning smoothies! I don’t know if that layout is the same in every store, but I absolutely love it. Besides, Kroger stores also have a large selection of Latin groceries and produce. Everything you need to make your favorite meals and to celebrate this Hispanic Heritage Month.

"Indeed, Kroger is an excellent destination for foodies that want to get the international ingredients they require to make delicious ethnic meals, including Mexican and Hispanic meals." And now let's go to the recipe.

Some refresquerias also sell tortas, which are hard roll sandwiches stuffed with cold cuts (or roasted pork) and avocado, Mexican fresh cheese, tomatoes, and pickled jalapeños. Therefore, it’s quite common to find people enjoying their “licuado” alongside a nice torta.

So, next time you’re shopping at your favorite Kroger, don’t forget to buy everything you need to recreate this classic duo at home; Kroger has all the ingredients, I even buy the special bread for the tortas at my Kroger store.

I’m very selective with whom I partner up with as I don’t want to overwhelm my readers with products & sponsorships. Therefore, if you see a company or product I’m working with, it’s because they rock! They help this little blog of mine keep producing delish recipes and showing you the things I love.
