Agua Fresca de Limón

JUMP TO RECIPE

This bright and tangy agua fresca de limón (lime agua fresca) is one of Mexico's most beloved drinks. It is simple, hydrating, and bursting with fresh citrus flavor made with a few ingredients (limes, sugar, water, and ice). There's nothing quite like a tall, ice-cold glass of agua de limón on a warm day. My go-to, no-fail recipe!

Agua Fresca de Limón

While aguas frescas come in endless varieties of fruits, vegetables, and even grains (jamaica, horchata, sandía, and more), agua de limón holds a special place as the classic, and easy-to-make refresher. Made with just limes (limones in Mexico), water, sugar, and ice, it's tart-sweet perfection in every sip. It's the kind of drink that instantly takes me back to childhood summers: pitchers chilling in the fridge after a long day playing outside, or grabbing a glass for my dad after a long day at work.

Lime is the most beloved citrus fruit in homes, kitchens, and markets across the country. It's so essential that we consume almost 40lb per person a year!. Whether in a hot little broth, with snacks, to marinate meats, as a home remedy, or as a refreshing drink like this agua fresca.

Notes, Tips, and Substitutions on Making Agua de Limón

  • Use fresh limes as they taste better than bottled juice. Key limes give a more authentic Mexican taste with their aromatic zest and higher acidity.
  • Choose limes with smooth skin as they have more juice and are easier to squeeze.
  • For a slightly more intense lime flavor, add more lime juice.
  • Add a handful of fresh mint leaves, strawberries, or even chia seeds for a fun twist (agua de limón con chía).
  • Replace the sugar with a sweetener of choice, such as honey, agave syrup, or your favorite sweetener.  My personal preference is pure cane sugar or organic cane sugar.
  • Best enjoyed fresh, but leftovers keep in the fridge for 1-2 days. Stir before serving, as it may separate.

What to Serve With Agua de Limón

Whenever I make this refreshing drink, I love to pair it with a light dish, like Easy chicken with herbs or braised chicken with tomatoes. Another great alternative, especially if you are missing the beach, is a tuna tostada or ceviche, which are both light and quick to make.  I also like to drink this agua fresca with a salad for a healthy meal or my favorite Chipotle shrimp taco.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lime Agua Fresca.

Here I would like to share the most popular questions I get, and my answer to the questions:

What is lime agua fresca, and how is it different from regular limeade or lemonade?

Agua fresca de Limón is the most consumed Mexican drink made primarily from fresh lime juice, water, and sugar, served ice-cold. It's lighter and more diluted than typical lemonade. Some versions use sparkling water for a fizzier "limonada" style, but classic agua de limón uses only water.

Why does my lime agua fresca turn out bitter?

Bitterness often comes from underripe limes. If you're sensitive to bitterness, stick to juicing limes; very ripe or sweeter limes can also help balance it.

Is lime agua fresca healthy?

Yes-it's very hydrating and loaded with vitamin C from the fresh limes, plus it's low in calories if you moderate the sugar. For a healthier twist, reduce the amount of sugar.

How long does it last, and how should I store it?

Fresh is best-make it the same day and store in the fridge for up to 1-2 days. Stir before serving, as separation can occur.

Can I add anything to flavor it up?

Yes! Popular add-ins include fresh mint leaves (for a lime-mint version), a pinch of salt to enhance flavors, or even a cucumber for a twist on cucumber-lime agua fresca. Some blend in herbs or serve with extra lime wedges.
